1. Will the tap reach?
Countertop basins sit proud of the worktop, so a standard deck tap can splash short and high. Aim for the water stream to land near the centre of the bowl, not the back slope. Deep, narrow bowls forgive long reach; wide, shallow bowls want a shorter, more vertical stream. If in doubt, a tall (high-rise) mono with a straight spout is the safe, good-looking default.
2. One hole or none?
Most countertop basins are "tap-hole free", which means your choices are a deck-mounted tall mono behind the basin, or a wall-mounted spout for the cleanest possible line. Our monos include the waste, which quietly saves you £15–£25 and a second order:
- Barmouth Basin Mono & Waste — £71.10
- Brecon Modern Curve Basin Mono — £76.50
- Newport Square Basin Mono — £80.10
- Orca Mono in Matte Black — £90.00
3. Match the finish to the basin
Chrome flatters everything and is easiest to keep perfect. Matte black sharpens matte basins and concrete-grey worktops. Brushed brass warms up whites and woods — the Swansea Brushed Brass Mono & Waste (£108.90) against a white ceramic bowl is our most-photographed combo. For freestanding basins, the floor-standing Swansea Freestanding Mono (from £152.10) does the same job without touching the deck.
4. Choose the basin itself
Ceramic for value and easy cleaning: the Lucca Countertop Ceramic Basin is £106.20. Fluted polymarble for texture: the Flauto Fluted Round is £108.90, with square, oval, D-shape and rectangle versions from £125.10. And for a statement, nothing beats hand-hammered metal — the Copper Sink 14x8 in Medium Antique (£249) and Hammered Antique Copper Bowl (£349) from Coppersmith Creations age beautifully.
